Ex Bulgaria Foreign Affairs Minister and current socialist MEP, Ivailo Kalfin, has called on the Bulgarian government to be more actively involved in the efforts to prevent Somali pirate raids in the Gulf of Aden.

Kalfin stated Monday that Bulgaria should take a more active political stance on the issue following the hijacking of two UK-flagged ships last week with a total of 13 Bulgarian crew on board.

Kalfin added that “Bulgaria should participate in the international efforts, the threat to ships in the Gulf of Aden is enormous, however the case of the kidnapped two kidnapped vessels ... is not a failure of European policy in this area.”

He concluded however by saying that “it is obvious that a lot of things still need to be done by the European Union on the issue ... allowing armed guards on ships and the more efficient use of convoys are two possibilities.”
