Economic Crisis Said to Shatter Bulgaria's Modest 'Baby Boom'

Society | January 2, 2010, Saturday // 17:42|  views

Bulgaria’s modest increase in birth rates over the last couple of years is going to disappear as a result of the effects of the economic crisis.

This has been predicted by Dr. Metodi Yankov, former head of the “Maychin Dom” specialized gynecology hospital, as cited by Darik Radio.

Yankov said the modest “baby boom”, i.e. a stabilization and small rise of the birth rate, has been due to young families deciding to have a second child.

He has predicted that the birth rate in Bulgaria would decline in the second half of 2010 with latest peak being around Easter 2010.

Yankov forecasts that the family would be discouraged from having a second child by the unfavorable economic conditions. He said that perhaps Bulgaria would see a new similar minor baby boom after 2012 if the economy stabilizes.
