“Now more than ever we have to realize that Bulgaria’s successes will not come as a lucky wish in a New Year’s banitza, but depend on those who know best and can do their best, on all of us,” President Parvanov said in his address. Photo by BGNES

President Georgi Parvanov warned Bulgarians will face an uphill struggle in 2010 as he addressed the nation minutes before the new year set in.

“The past 2009 will be remembered with the changes it brought in the political life of the country and the efforts to curb the crisis fallout. A year of ordeals and hopes, which will best describe the new 2010 as well,” Parvanov said in his traditional televised address.

“I hope that the worst forecasts for the development of the crisis will remain only warnings, but honestly speaking, the new year will not be easier than 2009,” he added.

Parvanov pointed out that the country’s successes may come only as a result of determined efforts and depend on each and every Bulgarian.

“Now more than ever we have to realize that Bulgaria’s successes will not come as a lucky wish in a New Year’s banitza, but depend on those who know best and can do their best, on all of us.”

Commenting the European Union initiative to declare 2010 the European Year for combating poverty and social exclusion, Parvanov stressed that Bulgaria may be an equal and proud partner of the European community only if its people show solidarity with those in need, with “those who pay the highest price in these times of crisis”.

“We need more humanity in our relations, in the attitude of the institutions and the society to these people,” Parvanov said.
