The cooperation mechanisms and controls applied by the European Commission on Bulgaria and Romania in the fields of home affairs and justice will remain in force, EC spokesman Mark Gray confirmed Thursday.

Gray’s comments come on the day that the possibility of having some of the so called safeguard clauses imposed on Bulgaria by the EU expires, as it marks 3 years as an EU state on January 1 2010. Bulgaria can now only face infringement procedures like the rest of the member states.

In relation to Justice and Home Affairs, however, the European Commission introduced a mechanism for cooperation and control, whose purpose was to monitor closely how things develop in Bulgaria and Romania in these fields. Gray said that Bulgaria has made process in both these areas but that there is still work to do, BTA reported.

The facility will continue to apply and the European Commission will continue to press the Bulgarian government and authorities to make necessary efforts to advance reforms, Gray concluded.
