Temperature records were seen across Bulgaria on New Year's Eve, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) reported Thursday.

Thermometers soared to 20,4 centigrade in the Northwestern city of Montana, an absolute record for the season. It was also hot in Veliko Tarnovo – 20,2 centigrade - a record for the last 40 years.

Varna, Ahtopol, Blagoevgrad, Dragoman and Sofia also saw temperatures of between 15-20 centigrade – unseen since the 1970s.

Weather forecasters expect the heat wave, brought about by unseasonal southerly winds, to continue until the weekend as Bulgaria welcomes the New Year in a surreal Spring-like atmosphere.
