The Bulgaria center-right GERB government has proposed changes in the law to require all hospitals to provide medical care 24 hours a day.

In the last cabinet meeting of 2009 it was decided that hospital should help to provide continuous 24-hour medical care in medical specialties for which they have obtained permission.

It was also announced that funding from the state budget and the budget of the National Health Insurance Fund will help hospitals meet several criteria – established medical standards, security of hospital medical staff, working and available medical equipment. Based on these criteria changes in the law will allow for the development of national and regional health cards.

Medical institutions will no longer all be multi-profile and will be defined as general hospitals and specialized hospitals.
