Bulgaria's speeding drivers are to face steep penalties in addition to the current fines, according to a new proposal for amending the Traffic Act.

Those driving with 20 to 50 km over the speed limit will have to pay the fine, plus an additional amount equal to the minimum monthly wage in Bulgaria.

The proposal was stated during a meeting of the Council for Traffic Safety Tuesday and is to be submitted to the Parliament.

The fine will rise as the minimum wage rises without the need to change the law each time.

In addition, fines for DUI and driving without a license will also go up. More cameras and radars are to be installed on Bulgaria's roads to eliminate direct contact between the traffic police and the violators. The system for electronic payment of fines is already in place and starting January will also include the National Revenue Agency.

Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, promised the amounts collected through the steep fines will be used for road maintenance and educating young drivers.
