Teachers are the only Bulgarian public sector employees who are to receive an end-of-year bonus salary, Sergey Ignatov, Minister of Education, has announced on Saturday.

Ignatov siaid that this award had been agreed a few days ago with Finance Minister Simeon Djankov, and that mayors and school directors had already been informed.

The bonus salaries have become available as a result of delegated school budgets, he added.

Ignatov praised the teachers for their work, saying they were such a dedicated body, they were "building a new Bulgaria", and fully deserved their bonus.

The average teacher’s salary is currently about EUR 700 per month, and there are hopes that this may be increased.

The Education Minister commented that, in this time of crisis, the education sector had received the largest budget for 2010, due to the efforts of Yordanka Fandakova, the previous minister.

"Education is the sector that receives twice as much money as the power ministries," he added.
