Bulgaria Finance Minister Simeon Djankov has stated that 2009 will go down in Bulgarian history as the worst in economic terms since the crash in 1997.

Djankov said that “it is good that this year is almost over because it was very difficult for us as a new government.” He added that the great task now is to make sure the country emerges from the crisis and that the economy improves.

With regard to the deficit for this year Djankov commented that it is impossible to complete 2009 without some kind of a deficit, but noted that Bulgaria’s budget deficit will be the smallest in the EU. He continued that “with a deficit of BGN 3,5 B before the government came into office it has performed well to reduce it to below BGN 500 M.”

Regarding his nomination for ‘Politician of the Year’ on Darik Radio, Djankov commented; “ I am still not a politician, I am an expert......I don’t think I’ll be a politician in the future either.”
