Members of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) have overwhelmingly voted in favor of accepting 2 extra wages as a Christmas bonus because of an “outstanding contribution during the year.”

The Chief Secretary of the Board, the Chief Inspector of the Inspectorate of the SJC and the Director of the Institute for Justice will also receive the bonuses.

The average salary of a Supreme Judicial Council member is just over BGN 2000. Thus each of the senior judiciary will receive additional financial incentives of close to BGN 5000.

Other public service workers including MPs have been deprived of Christmas bonuses or wage supplements. The Bulgarian police recently slammed the idea that the SJC should receive extra wages instead of them, especially as the SJC has been involved in one of the largest judicial scandals in Bulgarian history for most of this year.
