Bulgaria’s President, Georgi Parvanov, took part in a working lunch with heads of missions of EU Member States at the invitation of the Swedish Ambassador,Paul Beyer.

These traditional meetings between Bulgarian institutions and EU ambassadors are useful for both sides because they give very specific information about a shared vision for the region and the European Union as a whole, a spokesperson said on Wednesday.

Special interest was shown in the latest developments in Bulgaria's energy policy, and how the country sees its role and contribution to European energy policy.

President Parvanov said that the main conclusion to be made is that the Bulgarian government recently reaffirmed the commitments of Bulgaria on all three major energy projects and that work on them continued in search of better financial conditions and compliance with high environmental standards.

On the topic of enlargement and the European perspective in the Western Balkans, the president reiterated his vision for the updating of the Thessaloniki agenda.

He also noted the need for a common framework, as well as outlining separate parameters for each individual country. The Bulgarian head of state urged that the expertise of Bulgaria in the region should be used more actively by the European Union.

Other domestic current political issues were also discussed, such as forthcoming reforms in education and health, entry into the euro zone, the development of a strategy for national security, and the upcoming Consultative Council for National Security on Judicial Reform.
