Bulgaria’s President Georgi Parvanov declared Wednesday he deemed the debate about the broadcasting of Turkish language news on the National TV irrelevant.

Parvanov said he suspected that a “large trap has been set for the Prime Minister” Boyko Borisov with the initiating of the debate.

On Tuesday, Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Boyko Borisov declared himself in support of the call of the nationalist party Ataka for a referendum on whether to continue broadcasting daily news emissions in Turkish on the BNT 1 channel.

Borisov said he believed the national referendum was the best way to make sure that the majority of the Bulgarian population were in favor of the 10-minute daily news broadcasts in Turkish.

President Parvanov made it clear Wednesday he had made known his view in support of the broadcasts a number of times.
