The Swedish Presidency of the EU has called the holding of the runoff local elections in Kosovo on Sunday “important progress” in the democratic transition of the new republic.

In a special communique the Presidency has expressed its satisfaction with the fact that the elections were held in an orderly fashion, and that all communities participated in them.

The runoff local elections in Kosovo are viewed as a progress in the consolidation of a democratic and multi-ethnic society in accordance with EU principles.

The first round of the local elections in Kosovo took place on November 15, 2009. The local elections were the first elections organized by the authorities in Prishtina since the republic declared its independence from Serbia in February 2008.
