The Bulgarian governing center-right party GERB has supported the nationalist Ataka party’s call for a national referendum on whether to continue allowing the broadcast of Turkish language news on BNT1.

Bulgaria PM Boyko Borisov, speaking in Parliament, stated his support for the proposed referendum on the 10 minute daily news broadcast on the state funded BNT 1.

"I support that proposal, because only through it can we can be absolutely confident in the will of the Bulgarian people...there is sufficient capacity through regional communication tools, cable TV and other medias for people to receive foreign language news without it being on state TV or radio” Borisov said.

Nationalist Ataka party leader Volen Siderov stated that he had already collected 48 signatures from MPs who support the idea of a referendum on the issue.

He concluded; "As this media is dependent on the state budget, we believe there should be no news in any other language than Bulgarian.”
