The new Bulgaria state railway company (BDZ) Director, Pencho Popov, has stated that train passengers will soon be compensated for train delays.

Popov said that currently "if BDZ does not provide services in full they are compensated.” He added that the new regulations, to be bought in as early as next year, will require compensation for all passengers if a train is delayed at the fault of the railway company.

"About 50 % of passengers use new or newly refurbished trains....the remaining equipment is old, but reliable and meets the safety requirements," explained Popov.

He also concentrated on the difficult financial situation of the Railways – in debt by more than BGN 160 M, as well as having to pay a credit back of BGN 100 M in 2010 and suffering from the sacking of of 2000 employees.

Popov concluded by saying that he hopes Bulgaria will be able to allocate funds for the railways soon like in European countries.
