Bulgarians Rank 1st in EU by Corruption Perception Index

A staggering number of Bulgarians (97%)perceive corruption as a national problem, data from Eurobarometer shows.

The percentage is 5% higher compared to two years ago and ranks Bulgaria first in the European Union, followed by Greece and Hungary.

The the Public Opinion Analysis sector of the European Commission - Eurobarometer's study was published Wednesday on the occasion of the international Anti-Corruption Day.

94% of Bulgarians believe that corruption is most widespread in national institutions while 91% see corruption as a problem among regional and local authorities. From all EU citizens Bulgarians and Romanians believe the most there is no corruption at the EU institutions, but Bulgarians who suspect corruption practices on European level are on the rise – 25% more then two years ago,

Eurobarometer data further shows Bulgaria's Customs agents, magistrates and national politicians are perceived as the most corrupt. The number of Bulgarians, who believe politicians are involved in corruption practices is up 24% to 76% compared to 2007 and to the 56% average for the EU in 2009.

Curiously enough 76% of all Europeans believe corruption is an unavoidable and unsolvable problem while only 56% of Bulgarians think so.

In addition, 63% of the Bulgarian respondents think the new cabinet is applying sound measures in the fight against corruption, but 50% see those measures as insufficient and still ineffective. 80% say the court system must impose harsher penalties for those who have been proven to have been involved in corruption practices.

The pols was conducted in September and October among 26 663 EU citizens of which 1 000 were Bulgarians.
