Emotional abuse and economic deprivation will also be defined as domestic violence under amendments, which Bulgarian parliament adopted at second reading on Wednesday.

Under the legislative changes to the Protection against Domestic Violence Act, this type of violence has many forms including physical aggression, sexual abuse; emotional abuse; controlling or domineering; intimidation; stalking; passive/covert abuse and economic deprivation.

Emotional abuse has been defined as domestic violence in cases when the family members walk in fear because of threats, humiliation, criticism.

Experts say economic deprivation is witnessed when one of the partners in the family or intimate relationship comes to control their whole budget, taking into his own hands all decisions concerning the family income.

Children, who have become witnesses of domestic violence, will also be considered its victims.
