48-year-old Bulgarian Tsvetan Rangelov has been sentenced to life imprisonment in Austria over a brutal double murder.

On June 1, 2009, Rangelov murdered two spouses keeping a family restaurant in Pachfurth, Lower Austria, during a robbery.

He also wounded their daughter, who was on the second floor of the building and came down upon hearing the shots, and stole the daily turnover of EUR 1 500. The daughter’s boyfriend managed to flee and bring help saving the 21-year-old girl’s life.

Rangelov has been recognized by the daughter and his guilt is also proven by the DNA analysis. A cartridge case from a USSR-made gun which was found at the crime scene was also discovered near his house in Bulgaria. His car, a while Peugeot with Bulgarian license plates, was seen by neighbors in front of the restaurant.

During his extradition trial in Bulgaria in the summer of 2009, Rangelov said he went to Austria at the time of the murder in order to buy a jeep. He claimed that the Austrian family had been killed by drug dealers and that the Austrian policemen who came to Bulgaria threatened to make him a scapegoat.

Rangelov is known as the leader activists of the nationalist Ataka party in his hometown of Chiprovtsi in Northwestern Bulgaria; the Ataka leader Volen Siderov personally handed him his membership card in February 2009. He was also the head of the local “chitalishe”, a cultural community club.

Rangelov has told the local people in his hometown that he has fought in the wars in the former Yugoslavia because he married a Croatian woman while in Germany, and went to fight for her side. This part of his biography has never been confirmed.

He has a criminal record showing he spent 13 years in jail in Germany for robberies. Because of that, his nickname in his hometown was Tsetso Germanetsa, i.e. “the German”.

Rangelov’s sentence has not entered into force yet as he is appealing it.
