Bulgaria might soon face the dilemma of accommodating 6 000 convicts in local jails.

The news was reported Saturday by the Bulgarian information agency BGNES, citing their own sources from the Bulgarian Bar Association.

The attorneys are taking part in a press conference in Sofia dedicated to the fifth anniversary of the Human Rights Court in Strasbourg.

The 6 000 are Bulgarians, who have been arrested for various crimes in different EU Member States, and are being held behind bars. The EU rules postulate the convicts must serve their sentences in their native countries, which is said to pose a huge burden on the Bulgarian prison system.
