A ferry with more than 1 000 passengers has sunk partly in southern Bangladesh, BBC reported.

The accident happened near a river station at the town of Lalmohan on Bhola Island. The ferry was overcrowded which caused it to capsize partially.

At least 3 people are reported dead, and 50 are believed missing. Many have managed to make it to the shore but the rescue efforts are continuing.

Many of the passengers are reported to have been returning home for the greatest Muslim holiday Eid al-Adha.
