European Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso, has told Bulgaria’s new EU Commissioner-designate, Rumiana Jeleva, that she was going to be in charge of a novel portfolio.

Jeleva has been assigned the position of EU Commissioner in charge of international cooperation, humanitarian aid, and crisis response.

In a special letter to acting Bulgarian Foreign Minister Jeleva, Barroso has stated that she would be in charge of EU’s humanitarian aid and crisis response, and would be responsible for certain international cooperation tasks assigned to her by the EC President and/or his deputy, the EU High Representative on Foreign Relations.

Jeleva will be in charge of the tasks of the Directorate-General on Humanitarian Aid, which will be strengthened, and will involve fast delivery of necessary aid, as well as compliance with international humanitarian law.

Jeleva is expected to work in close cooperation not just with the EU High Representative, Catherine Ashton, but also with the Commissioner on interior. In addition to the whole Directorate General on Humanitarian Aid, two units from the Directorate-General will also be under Jeleva.
