Bulgaria’s new EU Commissioner, Rumiana Jeleva, has stated that the responsible portfolio allocated to her by EC President Barroso was a crucial recognition for Bulgaria.

Bulgaria's Foreign Minister, Rumiana Jeleva, was named Friday the new EU Commissioner on International Cooperation, Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Response.

“It is a crucial recognition for Bulgaria, it is a huge challenge. EC President Barroso told me yesterday that this was a man’s job,” Jeleva commented on her new appointment, as cited by the Bulgarian National Radio.

Jeleva said dealing with natural disasters, which are frequent in Europe, and the humanitarian problems they cause would be an important part of her work.

In her words, EC President Barroso has decided to assign to her the international cooperation portfolio partly because of the important relations that Bulgaria has with EU candidate countries such as Macedonia and Turkey.

She is also going to be in charge of EU’s cooperation with Asia and Latin America.
