The number of swine flu cases in Bulgaria is on the decline, according to Dr. Angel Kunchev, the country’s chief epidemiologist.

Kunchev, who is the head of the Anti-Epidemic Control Department at the Health Ministry, said that last week’s data showed the number of Bulgarians infected with the A(H1N1) virus was 6-7 times smaller than during the time the epidemic was declared in the first week of November.

According to the data he presented, there were 109 swine flu cases per 10 000 in Bulgaria last week. The only districts with somewhat higher number of A(H1N1) patients are Pazardzhik, Kardzhali, and Yambol but their number is on the decline there as well.

17 Bulgarians have died as a result of swine flu complications so far.

Dr. Kunchev also said the “Brisbane” strain was the “regular” type of flu which was expected to cause a flu epidemic in January and February of 2010. He did stress, however, that there was no way to make exact forecasts on how the situation would develop.
