The former Director of the National Revenue Agency (NRA), Maria Murgina, is investigated for organized VAT draining and political cover-up

The former Director of the National Revenue Agency (NRA), Maria Murgina, might face 2 more criminal charges in addition to the 3 already pressed against her.

The magistrates in the case have ordered the Agency for State Financial Inspection to prepare a report that should clarify why in 2006 the NRA leadership has financed architectural design projects for a future new NRA building when it has been obvious at the time that the Agency did not even have enough funds to renovate the existing facilities.

Three years ago the World Bank granted a BGN 30 M loan for the remodeling of the NRA building on the “Tsarigradsko Shosse” boulevard. The investigators say the former NRA leadership, headed by Murgina, was perfectly aware that at least BGN 80 M would be needed to build new facilities, and despite the lack of funds still paid for architectural projects.

The report's results might trigger new charges against Murgina.

In May, Murgina was charged with criminal breach of trust, false property declaration, and putting her employees under duress. The probe against her was launched in February after the State Agency for National Security (DANS) stripped the former NRA Director of her right to access classified information and amidst mounting accusations of huge organized draining of Value Added Tax (VAT) and political cover-up.
