Romanians Vote Overwhelmingly for Unicameral Legislature, Fewer MPs

74% of the Romanians have voted for a unicameral legislature in Sunday's referendum initiated by acting President Traian Basescu, which was held together with the Presidential Elections.

The figure is from the exit polls of the CSOP and IRES sociological agencies, as cited by the Romanian news website Ziare.com.

According to the exit polls, 82% have voted in favor of reducing the total number of Romanian MPs down to 300 from the 471 in both houses of the Parliament combined.

Incumbent Traian Basescu has a minor lead before leftist candidate Mircea Geoana before the runoff on December 6, 2009. According to the CURS exit poll, Basescu has 33,72% vs. 31,44% for Geoana; the INSOMAR poll shows 32,8% for Basescu and 31,7% for Geoana.
