Bulgarian Doctors and Nurses from across the country held a 15 minute voluntary silent protest at 12:00 Friday against the violence they are subjected to by patients and their relatives.

The Chairman of the Plovdiv medical society, Totko Naydenov, called on the Bulgaria Parliament to address the issue by changing the Penal Code to provide more severe punishment for perpetrators of attacks on medical staff.

Naydenov reported that he himself had been threatened, beaten up and even attacked with an axe while performing his duties as a practicing physician.

The protest was organized by the Bulgarian Medical Association and an official request for action to be taken by the Bulgaria Parliament was also sent to the Health Ministry.
