Bulgaria's ruling center-right party GERB won four out of six mayoral by-elections, which were held in the country on Sunday, official results show. The other two by-elections will be decided at run-offs next Sunday.
In the Bulgarian capital, Yordanka Fandakova from the ruling party GERB was elected the new Mayor of Sofia after receiving exactly 66,23% of the votes in Sunday’s elections.
The candidate of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, Georgi Kadiev, received 27,71% of the votes.
Architect Pavel Popov from the conservative RZS party has received 2,8%. Each of the other 15 candidates received below 1%.
Another candidate of the ruling GERB party swept the elections in the Sofia district of Pancharevo. Svetoslav Mitrev from the ruling party beat the other six candidates after collecting 57.99% of the votes against 5.83 % for the second-ranked Socialist party candidate.
The town of Pravetz, located close to the capital Sofia and known best as the birth town of former communist dictator Todor Zhivkov, will also have a mayor from the ruling party. Nikola Nitov garnered 63% of the votes against 37% for his only opponent, independent Pavlin Tsvetkov.
Kostadin Shahov, nominated by the ruling center-right GERB party, was mayor of the northwestern municipality of Vratsa in a vote marred by a low turnout. Shahov collected 61% of the votes.
The other two by-elections, which took place on Sunday – in the village of Beglezh, close to the northern Bulgarian town of Pleven, and the town of Razlog – will hold a run-off next Sunday.
