Bulgarians Show Staggering Lack of Interest in EU - Survey

Bulgaria in EU | November 13, 2009, Friday // 16:55|  views

Three-fourths of the Bulgarians say that they have not been affected by the country’s EU membership in any way whatsoever.

This becomes clear from a public opinion poll of the Alpha Research Agency whose results were presented Friday.

A further 15% say they have affected in a negative way by the fact that Bulgaria is a EU member.

According to the sociologists’ findings, the Bulgarians in general think that the EU membership benefits the politicians, the impostors, the corrupt officials, and the young people.

The major benefit of the EU for the Bulgarians is the opportunity to travel and work abroad. At the same time, they feel that there have been no positive changes at all in the fight against crime, the judicial system, and the agriculture sector.

Only 8% of the people say they have searched for information on the EU. What is more only 3% are fully-aware of the Lisbon Treaty is about, whereas a staggering 60% have admitted of not having heard of it at all.

The Alpha Research agency has commented that the lack of interest in the EU on part of the Bulgarian citizens is the result of the inefficient and poor approach on presenting the EU and its issues.

Bulgaria joined the EU on January 1, 2007.
