The Deputy Director of Bulgaria’s National Veterinary-Medical Service, Leonid Lavchev, has received a BGN 15 000 bail Monday from the Haskovo District Court.

Lavchev, who was arrested last Thursday for racketeering after allegedly receiving two bribes of BGN 1 000 from a private dairy farm in the southern city of Haskovo, stated before his hearing that Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naydenov was behind his arrest.

Lavchev continued that Naydenov had ordered the arrest as he was just about to be named as the Director of Bulgaria’s National Veterinary-Medical Service against the Agriculture Minister’s will.

Prosecutors requested a house arrest for Lavchev but the judge stated that this would harm his ability to receive treatment for hypertension and back problems.

Lavchev faces between 5 and 15 years in jail, and a fine of up to BGN 500 000 if found guilty of the charges.

The Interior Ministry said last Friday that they had information that Lavchev had been racketeering dairy farms all around the country for quite a while, and that this was not his first time.
