The overthrow of the Communist Party in Bulgaria was purely the result of a deliberate plot to transfer political and economic power, and nothing to do with the people.

This was the claim made by Konstantin Trenchev, leader of “Podkrepa”, the independent labor confederation, in an interview on bTV on Monday.

Trenchev stated that he was increasingly convinced that there had been an organized scenario for transition, because even today agents and collaborators of State Security (DS) are found everywhere in positions of influence.

To support this thesis, Trenchev referred to the issue of the “briefcases”.

These undoubtedly existed, said Trenchev, adding that people involved with “the old emigration” had told him that representatives of the Committee for Bulgarians Abroad had offered them the opportunity to “turn over some money abroad”.

Trenchev suggested that the events of November 10, 1989, were purely coincidental.

"The fact that enthusiasts appeared is another issue. There is no way we can pretend that we were the ones to overthrow Todor Zhivkov - they did it,” he stated.

"It is hard to expect any changes to come about, if those in power do not want to do it. The goal was to transfer ownership and for that to be done by the right people.”

"The main goal of the scenario for transformation of the economic and political power was for them to hold onto their position in order to allow time to pass, and for them to gradually acquire economic power, but in a way that nobody tries to find out where it all started from", Trenchev also commented.

Trenchev said he was convinced that the first democratic election was fraudulently won.

"It is categorical that the July 1990 election was not legitimate. They were relying on us being inexperienced, we were at cross-purposes regarding radicalism,” he maintained.
