A high-ranking official from the Czech presidency has said the country will leave the European Union after the Lisbon Treaty comes into force, reports say.

“After the Lisbon Treaty comes into force, the Czech Republic will lose its state independence. President Vaclav Klaus is fully aware of this. One of the options for the country to bring its sovereignty back is to leave the European Union,” Peter Gayek, deputy head of the cabinet of the president said, as cited by ITAR-TASS.

He stressed, however, that this is a scenario of last resort in the country's efforts to restore its state independence.

The Czech Republic's eurosceptic President Vaclav Klaus, who has never disguised his antipathy towards the EU's Lisbon treaty, signed it on Tuesday, thus completing its long-awaited ratification.

The signature of the Lisbon Treaty ratification came after last week the EU Council granted the Czech Republic an opt-out from the Charter of basic rights.

Alongside a number of institutional reforms of the EU architecture, the Lisbon Treaty is introducing the positions of President of the EU and of High Representative on Foreign Policy.
