Bulgaria to Increase Jail Sentence for Credit Fraudsters

Bulgaria Deputy Justice Minister, Daniela Masheva, has announced that people who submit false information to obtain credit will soon face up to six years in jail.

This is another of the new center-right GERB government’s draft amendments to the Bulgarian Penal code – earlier Tuesday it was announced that the prison sentence for kidnappers will increase from the current 5-15 years to 15 years to life.

Masheva also added that the new amendments will allow legal authorities to levy a fine of BGN 1000 -5000 on credit fraudsters on top of the jail sentence. Currently the sentence would involve just a fine of between BGN 1000- 3000.

Masheva concluded that the raising of the sanctions is driven by the fact that such crimes associated with obtaining credit have been rising dramatically in recent times. In her words are not talking about anti-crisis measure:

The draft Penal Code also includes increased penalties for crimes committed by and against police officers, and crimes against children.
