The Director of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), Rumyana Todorova, has announced her resignation Monday.

Todorova stated that a lack of confidence in her and the NHIF board from the current government was the reason for her resignation. She added that political pressure has been placed on her to resign for over a year and that Bulgaria PM Boyko Borisov had not shown any faith in her work.

"I can not work in this situation with an aggressive team that will destroy what has been built in the last 3 years of dialogue between the state system and doctors, patients," Todorova said.

She concluded that the NHIF will finish the year without a budget deficit despite the reduced resources and added that the Fund currently works at a “European level”.

The governing center-right GERB party members of the Bulgarian parliamentary health committee asked the Todorova and her board to hand in their resignations last Friday.
