Bulgaria's Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, has admitted indirectly that kidnappers have demanded a ransom of EUR 500 000 for the release of 22-year-old Rumen Guninski Jr.

During a press conference at the Unit for Combating Organized Crime, Tsvetanov was asked if it was true that the deadline for handing over the ransom for the businessman’s son expired Thursday.

“Maybe yes,” Tsvetanov answered. The Bulgarian Standart Daily announced earlier in the week that the kidnappers had demanded EUR 500 000 for the release Rumen Guninski Jr., the son of a wealthy Bulgarian businessman from the town of Pravetz.

This report was later refuted by Rumen Guninski Sr. and the Bulgarian police. On October 27, 2009, a signal that the 22-year-old man had been released rushed the special police units to an abandoned house in the Sofia outskirts.

Rumen Guninski Jr was kidnapped in public in the Sofia Studentski Grad Quarter on October 19, 2009.
