One of the two border policemen who have been arrested over contraband and a VAT-draining scheme in Northeast Bulgaria is a brother of the Governor of the Dobrich District.

The 49-year-old Iliya Zhelyazkov was arrested Friday night together with another border officer at the Yovkovo Border Crossing Point on Bulgaria’s land border with Romania over contraband.

The two officers were letting through trucks with fictitious goods which, according to the police, is part of a scheme for siphoning off value-added tax from the state. The two officers have already been charged with criminal breach of trust.

Zhelyazkov has turned out to be the brother of Zhelyazko Zhelyazkov, the District Governor of Dobrich, who was appointed recently by the new government of the GERB party.

Before becoming District Governor, Zhelyazko Zhelyazkov was the chief of the Economic Police Unit in Dobrich. He has not made any comments on his brother’s arrest yet.
