Two Bulgarian border policemen were arrested in the northeastern town of Kardam late Friday night over corruption charges.

The information was announced by Bulgaria’s Interior Minister, Tsvetan Tsvetanov, who said the specialized police operation began two days ago and is still continuing. All investigative and procedural activities should end by Sunday.

The two are a border police employee and the shift manager, who are said to have been involved in a scheme for large scale contraband.

The Interior Minister declared Bulgarian police now have the will to end corruption practices stemming from the rule of the former cabinet and its impunity policy towards criminals.

“With the political strength of the new cabinet, the State will demonstrate it is stronger than the crime,” Tsvetanov reiterated Saturday during the Darik radio political talk show.

The Minister praised the work of his employees during his leadership of the Interior, pointing out that from 35 murders in Bulgaria over the last three months, 30 have already been solved in comparison to 2008 when only 12 murder cases were solved for the entire year.

Tsvetanov further said that over 20 police employees have been fired during the same period for working with the underworld.
