Prosecutor Georgi Velkov from the northern Bulgarian city of Pleven has been busted with a bribe of BGN 23 000 Friday night.

Velkov, who is a prosecutor at the Pleven District Prosecutor’s Office, was arrested together with businessman Iliyan Mihaylov in a joint operation of the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office, the Interior Ministry, and the State National Security Agency DANS.

A third man is also reported to have been arrested but his name is still unknown. Unconfirmed reports say that the third man in question paid the BGN 23 000 bribe to Prosecutor Velkov who was supposed to terminate an investigation against him. Businessman Iliyan Mihaylov appears to be a middleman.

The investigation has been taken up by the Sofia City Prosecutor’s Office which is the one to investigate magistrates and officials with immunity.

The men have been arrested for 72 hours, and their permanent detention is expected to be approved on Monday.
