Land expropriation procedures are delaying the extension of the first Sofia Metro line to the Sofia Airport, rather than the lack of funding.

This has been announced by acting Sofia Mayor Gerdzhikov after his meeting with EU Regional Policy Commissioner, Pavel Samecki on Friday. Gerdzhikov said the European Commission was ready to finance the Airport subway connection project.

“We have prepared the blue prints. We need to expropriate land of 240 owners. If the government helps us, the European Commission is ready to allocate to us funds for the completion of this part of the line,” the acting Sofia Mayor declared.

The first line of the Sofia Metro reaches the Mladost 1 Quarter. It is supposed to be extended to the Mladost 3 Quarter, and to the Sofia Airport, thus providing a shuttle link from the Airport to the downtown of the Bulgarian capital.
