The Director of Bulgaria's Road Agency, Dimitar Ivanov, was released from his duties Wednesday.

The information was announced by the Minister of Regional Development and Public Works, Rosen Plevneliev, who said he dismissed Ivanov after the deadline for his resignation's submission expired Tuesday.

Plevneliev says he received information from Brussels that Ivanov has made efforts to change the EU funds abuse and mismanagement at the Agency and his dismissal was not due to lack of competency or good will to conduct honest public tenders.

“The problem here is leadership. We need to make decisions in the right direction with a strong hand,” Plevneliev is quoted as saying.

Bulgaria's Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov appointed Dimitar Ivanov as Director of the Agency at the end of July. Ivanov was the head of the Roads Agency in August-October 2008 after the institution was shaken by a corruption scandal in the beginning of 2008. At the time Ivanov resigned over health issues.
