Bulgaria Prosecutor Probes Galeria Newspaper over Classified Leak

Bulgaria's Prosecutor's Office has initiated a probe against the daily “Galeria” for leaking state secrets.

The information was reported Wednesday by the Chief Prosecutor's spokesperson, Stilyana Kozhuharova, who said the details of the reports published by the newspaper were prime classified information and the probe is verifying how many people had access to it.

Kozhuharova also said the probe involved mainly individuals from both the former and the current staff of the National State Security Agency (DANS), who knew about the classified report, but declined answering questions if journalists would be held legally responsible.

A separate probe is ongoing, involving the infamous DANS spying case with the same name – Galeria. DANS is alleged to have been spying during the term of the previous cabinet against representatives of the Bulgarian media. Kozhuharova said this investigation still has not achieved results.

On Tuesday, the Editor-in-Chief of the sensational, only week-old daily "Galeria," Zoya Dimitrova, and journalist, Kristina Petrashkova, were called for questioning at DANS over a DANS report recently published in the newspaper.

Information about a DANS report submitted to former Bulgaria PM, Sergey Stanishev, regarding corruption in high echelons of power, including ministers, first emerged in the beginning of September.

At the time, YaneYanev, the leader of the conservative Order, Law and Justice (RZS) party, accused Stanishev of concealing the report, something the former PM firmly denied.

Almost at the same time as parts of the report leaked through the “Galeria” newspaper, current PM, Boyko Borisov, confirmed in a TV interview that there is indeed such report and he had just received it from DANS
