Greece’s Parliament has supported a vote of confidence in the newly-elected Socialist government on Monday.

The vote was cast along party lines passing by a margin of 160 in favor to 140 against, the Wall Street Journal reported.

It came at the end of a three-day parliamentary debate on the new government's policy priorities, and which focused heavily on Greece's economy and the poor state of public finances.

"The Greek economy needs an immediate boost. But we also need an immediate, but medium term, systematic program for tidying up public finances," said incoming PM George Papandreou just prior to the vote. "We commit to doing both of those things."

Papandreou was sworn in on October 6 as the new Prime Minister of Greece after his party PASOK won the October 4 Parliamentary Elections.
