Bulgaria’s former Prime Minister, Sergey Stanishev, has resigned as Chair of the Bulgarian Socialist Party only to run for the same post immediately at its Sunday’s Congress.

After a one-hour speech accounting for his rule as Prime Minister in 2005-2009, and for his role and vision of the Bulgarian Socialist Party, Stanishev has prompted new elections for the Chair position.

He is facing three other candidates for the same post. All three are Members of Parliament – Mladen Chervenyakov, Tatyana Doncheva, and Yanaki Stoilov, who is known as the leader of the left wing in the party.

Sunday’s 47th Congress of the BSP did not originally include Chair elections in its agenda but this issue was added at the insistence of Stanishev himself.

Expect further details as the voting progresses.
