Nuclear Expert: Belene NPP Crucial for Bulgaria's Development

The construction of the Belene Nuclear Power Plant is of crucial important for Bulgaria’s development as a high-tech nation, and its necessity must not be questioned at all.

This is the view of Yanko Yankov, former Director of Bulgaria’s only function nuclear power plant at Kozloduy.

“Bulgaria seems like a very weird nation. Currently, over 65 countries from around the world are requesting help from the International Atomic Energy Agency in order to launch nuclear programs while Bulgaria is questioning the necessity of the construction of the Belene NPP,” Yankov told the Bulgarian National Radio.

“Bulgaria is one of the 32 countries in the world who have this technological edge,” the energy expert declared stressing that the question of whether Bulgaria should build a new nuclear power plant or not was totally inadequate.

In his words, electricity is not just a matter of the market even though the market is used in order to regulate its value; rather, it is a matter of infrastructure.

“The construction of the Belene NPP should not be seen as a market procedure. Electricity is what will help Bulgaria develop into a nation of new technologies. Everything gets shut down if there is no electricity. The Belene NPP will be the future of Bulgaria’s infrastructure for the next 80 years. It will guarantee the Bulgarian citizens their independence for the next 80 years,” the former Director of the Kozloduy NPP stated.

Yankov thinks that it is pure “madness” to believe that Bulgaria will be dependent on Russia if it buys a plant whose main element have been produced in Russia, and a fair share of its security systems have been produced in France and Germany.

“The question of whether we need Belene or not should not be posed at all,” he said.
