Bulgaria Capital Cab Drivers Warn over Protest

There are 35 000 cabs in Bulgaria and over 20 000 of them pay nothing to the state, Yankov said.

Over 400 cab drivers in the Bulgarian capital Sofia will protest next week if Lyubomir Hristo, head of the Automobile Administration Agency, is not released of duty immediately.

The intentions of the taxi drivers have been announced Friday by the chair of the Taxi Drivers Federation, Yane Yankov.

In his words, five big taxi companies in Sofia are operating illegal, with the permission of the head of the Executive Agency Automobile Administration, which costs causes the budget BGN 150 M losses.

“Lyubomir Hristov is a criminal and the author of the gray economy in the taxi business”, Yankov added.

The companies which, according to the federation, work illegally do not sign labor contracts and do not pay social insurances and taxes.

There are 35 000 cabs in Bulgaria and over 20 000 of them pay nothing to the state, Yankov said.

The Taxi Drivers Federation has presented data on the case to the Deputy Transport Minister, Kamen Kichev. Darik Radio reported that he had promised to change the agency's management as soon as possible.
