The European People's Party supports the nomination of the Bulgarian Foreign Minister, Rumiana Jeleva, for European Union Commissioner.

This has been announced by EPP's Secretary Genral, Antonio Lopez, cited by the press office of the ruling Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party.

Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, officially announced Jeleva's nomination earlier in October. Initially, he said that Bulgaria would want the Energy Commissioner position. A day later Borisov corrected himself saying that he would prefer if she takes the Regional Development, but the more realistically sounded the Enlargement Commissioner.

The support for Jeleva's nomination was first demonstrated during the visit of Bulgaria's Education Minister, Yordanka Fandakova, in the European Parliament. Fandakova chose the EP as the first place to officially present her nomination for Sofia Mayor, and the actual start of her campaign.

“The EPP gives all its support to Yordanka Fandakova in the upcoming elections. We will cooperate with GERB for the election of Fandakova and Jeleva on these two important positions”, Lopez said after a meeting with Fandakova.

“The right person at the right place”, Vise President of the EPP group in the European Parliament, Othmar Karas, called Fandakova.

It is still unclear who will the the Education Minister position in case Yordanka Fandakova becomes Mayor of the Bulgarian capital city Sofia.
