The Bulgarian conservative party “Order, Law, Justice” (RZS) has nominated architect Pavel Popov to run in the November elections for Mayor of Sofia.

Popov’s nomination was presented Sunday by the RZS leader Yane Yanev. “We are nominating a technocrat who is not a political puppet”, Yanev said. More information on Pavel Popov is available HERE.

The reason RZS is running with its own candidate for the Sofia Mayor position is the fact that the Bulgarian Socialist Party cannot offer a viable alternative to the GERB candidate, according to RZS Deputy Chair Dimitar Abadzhiev.

Yanev has made it clear their independent nomination did not mean withdrawing their support from the GERB government. Rather, it was a manifestation of the party’s desire to offer an alternative, and to prevent one single party from assuming all positions of power in the country thus creating a threat for democratic governance.

He also said RZS would have considered supporting GERB’s candidate but the ruling party did not send them any governance program to discuss.

Earlier on Sunday the Union of Free Democrats – the party of former Sofia Mayor Stefan Sofiyanski – nominated its own candidate, Ivan Antikadzhiev.

The GERB party has nominated Education Minister and former Sofia Deputy Mayor Yordanka Fandakova. The Bulgarian Socialist Party has nominated the “red yuppie” Georgi Kadiev. The Sofia Mayor elections are scheduled for November after former Mayor Boyko Borisov because Prime Minister in July.
