Macedonia's Spaska Mitrova Harassed in Jail over Being Bulgarian

Macedonian with Bulgarian passport Spaska Mitrova was harassed for being Bulgarian while in jail.

This was announced by Mitrova herself in an interview for bTV. Mitrova was realesed from the prison in Skopje Thursday after serving 2 months and 8 days of her highly controversial three-month sentence.

Bulgaria’s President Parvanov called Mitrova’s release “overdue”, and Prime Minister Borisov said he was “speechless” about Macedonia’s justice system.

Mitrova also said she was in a bad health condition, and that she was psychologically harassed by the prison guards. She said that the other inmates who were from various nationalities treated her relatively well.

The greatest issue for the 23-year-old mother is that she has not gotten her underage daughter back, and does not even know where the child is. The child was given to Mitrova’s ex-husband for the duration of her stay in jail.

“When I was released, I went straight to the police because I was advised so, because they took my daughter. The policeman was very aggressive, he said to me, “I know who you are, you have no business here, there is no child, and we don’t care,” Mitrova explained.

She was told by Macedonia’s social workers that she was still supposed to be in jail, and that they had no idea where her daughter was. A new court case over the child’s custody is expected to take place.

“Spaska Mitrova’s case is not over until she gets her child back, and both come for treatment in Bulgaria. The Military Medical Hospital in Sofia is ready to accommodate them,” said Bozhidar Dimitrov, Bulgaria’s Minister for Bulgarians abroad.
