The Mayor of Veliko Tarnovo, Rumen Rashev, has been the victim of a BGN 1 M alleged blackmail attempt from a group who promised to ‘sort out his legal problems’.

Rashev and Veliko Tarnovo chief architect Elena Abadzhieva currently face malfeasance in office charges which could lead to a jail term of up to 8 years.

Seven people were arrested after Rashev himself contacted the Prosecutor’s Office regarding the alleged blackmail.

On October 4, Sofia District Court, ruled that four of the group should remain in custody until trial. Rashev allegedly suffered over 2 weeks of harassment from the group.

Rashev said that the blackmailers had promised that three high ranked officials could help solve his legal problems for him in return for EUR 500 000 but he did not mention their names.

Rashev was also involved in the arrest of the group as when he traveled to Plovdiv to meet them they were arrested.
