The new cabinet wants to destroy the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP), former Prime Minister and BSP leader, Sergey Stanishev, declared Sunday.

The Citizens for European Development of Bulgaria (GERB) party demonstrates aggression towards BSP and wishes to wipe us out by a coordinated political campaign in two directions – morality and competency, Stanishev said in a meeting in the Black Sea city of Burgas.

The former PM spoke about how BSP must become a strong opposition with tough teams and people who are fighters to help overcome this difficult for the Socialists period. He reiterated the need of strong opposition in times when social achievements must be preserved, when many people begin to realize the hardships they will face over the rightist rule of the country.

Stanishev further stressed on the good things BSP has done for the country such as the EU membership, increase of income, economic development, modernizing the infrastructure.

The BSP leader, however, pointed out the party needed revival and change and put his hopes on the upcoming party congress and the creation of the new youth organization “Union” next weekend to include 15 000 young socialists.

When asked what he thought about the drastic increase of cigarettes’ excise proposed by Finance Minister, Simeon Djankov, Stanishev said that the move would kill the Bulgarian cigarette maker Bulgratabac Holding and create hardship for many consumers.
