Spain has welcomed the Ireland’s ratification of the Lisbon Treaty after Friday’s second Irish referendum on it.

The Spanish government has vowed to make the application of the Lisbon Treaty, which is expected to come into force by the end of 2009 now that Ireland has ratified it, the top priority of its term as holder of the rotating EU Presidency – January-June 2010.

“The Spanish EU Presidency is going to apply this Treaty, which symbolizes new Europe of the 21st century. We are very pleased with this very clear win of the Treaty supports. The period of insecurity is over,” said Diego Lopez Garrido, Secretary of State for the EU at the Spanish government, as cited by BGNES.

Garrido also said the Irish had “seen Europe as the best way to cope with the economic crisis.” In his words, Spain’s fourth term as holder of the rotating EU Presidency will be the most complex and challenging one.
